About Us
Verlorenkloof Estate is situated in the heart of the Trout Triangle near Lydenburg. The estate’s most outstanding feature is its natural beauty, with awesome mountains and a pristine trout river providing owners of the share-block with an unforgettable brush with nature.
The Location
Follow the N4 for three hours from Gauteng, turn off through verdant farm lands and find Verlorenkloof Estate in a beautiful secluded valley at the foot of the escarpment between Machadodorp and Lydenburg.
The estate is a well-known landmark in a safe and settled rural community and is bordered by the Crocodile River from where the land sweeps up through wetland and grassland to the forested kloofs of the Steenkampsberg and the Dullstroom highlands above.
Lydenburg is the closest town 45 km away, Nelspruit is 100 km, and all the spectacular sights of the Escarpment and Lowveld are within a two hour drive.
The People
Verlorenkloof was developed and is managed by Eric and Heidi Johnson, whose family has owned property in the area since 1970. They are assisted by a dedicated and experienced team, all resident on the estate or nearby. There is a firm commitment to service, the land and the community, with close attention to detail.
The owners at Verlorenkloof are largely from Pretoria and Johannesburg and share in the strong sense of custodianship over land and nature.
The Lodge
The Lodge Main Building opened in April 2010.
ARCHITECTURE: Verlorenkloof is blessed with the most beautiful surrounding scenery and we wanted to create a space that would draw in the natural surroundings and lay comfortably within the landscape. The cottage type stone and thatch architecture of the Crofts was not an option due to the size and span required of the building. Function dictated, and the design evolved into a composition of stone, glass and solid masonry, with wonderful volumes and spaces resulting.
INSIDE: The lodge offers a welcoming reception. Guests can now browse through our gallery and gift shop as well as indulge at the Foodspace deli. All foodstuffs can also be pre-ordered. A common room provides space for meetings but more popularly for sometimes boisterous! TV viewing and leisurely time can be spent having a read in the library or in front of the fireplace. The all day coffee shop has proved a popular stop at the end of each day’s walk and on Sunday’s Faith’s themed brunches are becoming a firm favourite.
